Agenda
Gaylord Student Center, MAY 29, 10:00 - 12:00
Goal: Organize YAC 2015-2016.  Theme, Officers, Calendar, Meeting time details
Facilitated by Aubrey
Minutes by Dylan and Mrs. Clay
Calendar: By Cathy
Agenda detailed notes on post-its: Safra and Mariam
Pictures by Mrs. Clay

Before the meeting began, Seondre Carolina talked to us about being a recipient of the MLK Ambassador Scholarship at Ithaca University.  He sent the following article.

The Martin Luther King Scholar Program at Ithaca College is a dynamic learning community, developing future leaders and global citizens who are committed to promoting King’s legacy of social justice and equality in their personal and professional lives, engaging in public services, building bridges to other communities, and educating others with their international perspective.

Seondre Carolina'15, recipient of the Martin Luther King School Program scholarship at Ithaca College stated, "The MLK Program at Ithaca College was based on involvement with community service, leadership, and academics.

Through my involvement with Youth Lead OKC, YAC and the countless other organizations that I have worked with through them gave me an edge when applying to the program. There were 300 applicants, 30 were invited and flown out to the campus to interview and participate in some activities.   Afterwards 15 were chosen to enter the program. Through my interview I talked about my involvement with Youth LEAD and YAC which sparked a conversation that outlasted some of the other interviews.

Doing community service while always good for others will also benefit you by making you a better leader, a better person, and give you those important connections that you may need one day.  Those connections  helped me land into a program that lets me travel the globe researching social issues, and better understand the true complexity of the world while also receiving a $47,000 scholarship to attend Ithaca College in New York."

- WHY? YAC:  Youth Acting in the Community.  It is a service-learning club with a mission of helping others find their passion to serve and promoting service-learning experiences of youth voice and choice.

-HOW?
I.  Calendar picture forthcoming
*****Meetings and Service Action
Connections to Daily Announcements and process of selection of volunteer activity;
-Goal to promote greater "Acting in the community"
Meetings will have an activity and/or skill
Goal: to keep members actively involved and collaborating  There will be an intentional effort to promote greater collaboration between grades.  Ex. board involved in guiding and being part of projects.
-advertising "committee" to advertise to school.  Works in collaboration with Secretary who filters and selects agenda from "Mrs. Clay blog suggestions"
-more collaborations for projects
-not separated by grade *question mark*
Cathy as the new Secretary will choose the service focus for each week and the daily announcements will have YAC PICS for the week.  STUCO will read one of the YAC pics for the week.  Mrs. Clay will prioritize YAC pic. for weekend sponsorship.  An adult is required when groups of teens are volunteering for liability and safety reasons

II.  Theme for 2015-2016:  Children with the following focus areas
a. Literacy-  Teens-4-Education  Bookmarks like projects..  We will explore connections to NYLC YAC Youth4Education
- Webcast with Bezos Foundation on September 8, 8:45 approved.  A Spanish class will host the webcast and the YAC member in the class will facilitate the webcast..  Seniors and sophomores facilitate this project focus
-Books for Bodine Elementary:  YAC mentoring project opportunity in August.  Also the possibility to help them build a Kaboom playground in one day.  Possible dates:  August, MLK Day or end of the year, April or May.  YAC members needed to write the grant at Kaboom.  The cost of the playground is 70,000 to 170,000.  The kids design what they want to have at their school.  It is a long process and the grant writing has to start next week.
-Globally:  The Pulsera project

b. Health - Children's Hospital Placemats.  Craft videos to be shown at children's rooms. Blood drive.  Maybe have children at Children's Hospital make bookmarks.  Juniors facilitate this project focus in a collaborative way with other grades. Mallory and Gabrielle were interested in knitting hats for children undergoing chemotherapy. STUCO promotes healthy choices with Walk-A-Thon

c. Poverty:  Food Drive for Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.  Last week in October.  This will be a project focus facilitated by the freshman with guidance, support and involvement from the Executive Board.  Globally:  The pulsera project will fundraise in collaboration with the Spanish Club
-grade projects get a little more guidance
-need a little more focus
-more collaborative

d. We were looking for another area of focus to replace self-esteem.  Relationship Building was mentioned as a component of National Days of Service  9/11, MLK Day, Peace Week, Kindness Week, National Volunteer Week, Global Youth Service Days.  But this was still left ON THE PARKING LOT UNTIL THE AUGUST FEDEX, date and time TBA by Aubrey and Dylan.  Mrs. Clay also requested bringing back a recognition lunch at the end of the year to thank the YAC leadership and to invite community organizations to reflect on the impact provided by the Cyclone leadership of citywide youth boards.  Parentswill be invited.  Will be limited to 100 people and it will be during lunch the first week of May.  May= some form of banquet, (sort of like cum laude lunch)

3. PLANNING TEAM: EXEC BOARD

Co-Presidents
-main speaker, leadership, guidance on projects, filter agendas, sets calendars.  Participates in service projects when schedule permits it.  Promotes "acting" in the community
-Aubrey & Dylan

Vice-President
-work with the presidents to be the voice, VP steps up to lead meetings when president(s) are not present
-Help set and handle the agenda at meetings and participate in projects when schedule permits it.  This position is a step towards having full leadership of YAC the following year.  A President in training.

Secretary
-take notes, filters YAC Pic for the week for DA and works with Co-Presidents and Vice-President to have the agenda set for meetings.  Takes minutes during meetings  Works closely with the Marketing and Communication offices on flyers, posters, business cards, t-shirt.  The Secretary has to know every decision officers are making to inform the Executive Board and the members
-Cathy Z

Treasurer
-budgets
Needs to develop a grant application system to allocate $100 a month coming from S-L budget
Other funding comes from dues??? and Fall Fest fundraiser
Needs money for: Snacks for meetings.  Supplies for projects not available from the S-L program
We need to decide on a system for the snacks
a. Dues to purchase snacks for every meeting and thank you gifts to YAC leadership at end of year
b. Voluntary sign-up knowing that some will not sign-up or will forge

-Manage the funding YAC raises at Fall Fest and create a grant proposal for the $100 the service-learning budget provides to help youth initiatives on a monthly basis.  Read the proposals and make a decision of who gets the funding.  Sometimes teachers and students will be competing for the funding.  It can be tricky sometimes and you might not always make everyone happy.  That is why an application process is needed.

-Apply for grants to enhance what YAC does and maybe help an intentional and direct funding connection with YLOKCasady needs.

Adult Grant Writing Resources:   Mrs. Clay helps  with grant writing, but we need to have grants checked by Mr. Evan Walter, our Development Director because he is an expert in the field and because we need to make sure he knows about any fundraising efforts going on at Casady at any level.

For the year 2015-2016 here are some current grants available

A. From http://karmaforcara.org/get-involved/apply-for-a-microgrant/?  This is to bring money for a personal initiative a teen wants to lead.

Here’s your chance to make a real impact by inspiring compassionate actions wherever you live. Join with the Charter for Compassion International to offer the beautiful film, “Kindness is Contagious” in your community. Let’s take compassion viral!

How to host a theatrical screening event in your community:
“Kindness Is Contagious” is a great way to open up a dialogue about the power of Kindness in your city. You can use independent film to galvanize your community and highlight groups and organizations doing great things in your area. In order to make this possible the creators of this lovely film teamed up with a distribution company called GATHR to make it easy for you to bring "Kindness Is Contagious" to your local theater at absolutely no cost to you.

GATHR uses a “Theatrical‐On‐Demand” model to allow audiences all over the country to bring amazing film content otherwise unavailable to your town. You simply request a screening at some of your favorite local theaters and they coordinate the logistics for you. You won’t have to pay any screening room rental or exhibition fee – But here's the thing, we need to reach our ticket goals in order to make the event happen or "tip it" so we will need you to spread the word to your community any way you can. Once enough people reserve tickets, the screening event is on!

Here are 3 easy steps to follow:
1- Click the link below to request a screening of the film at your local theater.

2- Enter the PROMOTIONAL CODE:  CCI when requesting to ensure that Gathr identifies your event as part of the Charter for Compassion campaign.

3- Be Flexible! The more options you give Gathr, the quicker they can get your screening set up.
4- Once you submit your request be sure to confirm the request via the Gathr email. Once confirmed, Gathr will send you a link to the screening event. Send this link to colleagues, friends, family and anyone in the community and encourage them to do the same!
