Before the meeting began, Seondre Carolina talked to us about being a recipient of the MLK Ambassador Scholarship at Ithaca University. He sent the following article.
The Martin Luther King Scholar Program at Ithaca College is a dynamic learning community, developing future leaders and global citizens who are committed to promoting King’s legacy of social justice and equality in their personal and professional lives, engaging in public services, building bridges to other communities, and educating others with their international perspective.
Before the meeting began, Seondre Carolina talked to us about being a recipient of the MLK Ambassador Scholarship at Ithaca University. He sent the following article.
Seondre Carolina'15, recipient of the Martin Luther King School Program scholarship at Ithaca College stated, "The MLK Program at Ithaca College was based on involvement with community service, leadership, and academics.
Through my involvement with Youth Lead OKC, YAC and the countless other organizations that I have worked with through them gave me an edge when applying to the program. There were 300 applicants, 30 were invited and flown out to the campus to interview and participate in some activities. Afterwards 15 were chosen to enter the program. Through my interview I talked about my involvement with Youth LEAD and YAC which sparked a conversation that outlasted some of the other interviews.
Doing community service while always good for others will also benefit you by making you a better leader, a better person, and give you those important connections that you may need one day. Those connections helped me land into a program that lets me travel the globe researching social issues, and better understand the true complexity of the world while also receiving a $47,000 scholarship to attend Ithaca College in New York."

2. YAC Meeting 2015-2016
- WHEN? Tuesdays B-Block from 10:10- 10:55 at the Harper Wing. YAC Executive Board will meet once a month for breakfast to have an overview of the YAC meetings for the month
- WHY? YAC: Youth Acting in the Community. It is a service-learning club with a mission of helping others find their passion to serve and promoting service-learning experiences of youth voice and choice.

Cathy as the new Secretary will choose the service focus for each week and the daily announcements will have YAC PICS for the week. STUCO will read one of the YAC pics for the week. Mrs. Clay will prioritize YAC pic. for weekend sponsorship. An adult is required when groups of teens are volunteering for liability and safety reasons
II. Theme for 2015-2016: Children with the following focus areas
a. Literacy- Teens-4-Education Bookmarks like projects.. We will explore connections to NYLC YAC Youth4Education
- Webcast with Bezos Foundation on September 8, 8:45 approved. A Spanish class will host the webcast and the YAC member in the class will facilitate the webcast.. Seniors and sophomores facilitate this project focus
-Books for Bodine Elementary: YAC mentoring project opportunity in August. Also the possibility to help them build a Kaboom playground in one day. Possible dates: August, MLK Day or end of the year, April or May. YAC members needed to write the grant at Kaboom. The cost of the playground is 70,000 to 170,000. The kids design what they want to have at their school. It is a long process and the grant writing has to start next week.
-Globally: The Pulsera project
b. Health - Children's Hospital Placemats. Craft videos to be shown at children's rooms. Blood drive. Maybe have children at Children's Hospital make bookmarks. Juniors facilitate this project focus in a collaborative way with other grades. Mallory and Gabrielle were interested in knitting hats for children undergoing chemotherapy. STUCO promotes healthy choices with Walk-A-Thon
c. Poverty: Food Drive for Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. Last week in October. This will be a project focus facilitated by the freshman with guidance, support and involvement from the Executive Board. Globally: The pulsera project will fundraise in collaboration with the Spanish Club

d. We were looking for another area of focus to replace self-esteem. Relationship Building was mentioned as a component of National Days of Service 9/11, MLK Day, Peace Week, Kindness Week, National Volunteer Week, Global Youth Service Days. But this was still left ON THE PARKING LOT UNTIL THE AUGUST FEDEX, date and time TBA by Aubrey and Dylan. Mrs. Clay also requested bringing back a recognition lunch at the end of the year to thank the YAC leadership and to invite community organizations to reflect on the impact provided by the Cyclone leadership of citywide youth boards. Parentswill be invited. Will be limited to 100 people and it will be during lunch the first week of May. May= some form of banquet, (sort of like cum laude lunch)

The Secretary has to know every decision officers are making to inform the Executive Board and the members

Adult Grant Writing Resources: Mrs. Clay helps with grant writing, but we need to have grants checked by Mr. Evan Walter, our Development Director because he is an expert in the field and because we need to make sure he knows about any fundraising efforts going on at Casady at any level.

Peace Week 9/11-9/21 Cathy will call meeting time for Peace Team to plan YAC connections to this week. Teachers from all divisions are meeting next week to connect their curriculum to this week. Pinwheels were mentioned at the YAC Fedex invitational, but not making them for quantity like last year, but for quality and with a learning component, which the LD Peace Educator teacher, Mrs. Morgan, would like to be the uniting theme of the Golden Rule Across Religions, creating a Peace Village.

-The Pulsera Project: Nicaraguan bracelets for sale with proceeds going to Nicaragua. Safra and Mariam facilitators. Will sell the bracelets from September 16-October 12: This YAC project is connected to the Spanish Club and Hispanic Heritage Montn September 16-October 12. We need to sell something to generate money for YAC. Should YAC have dues to cover the cost of bringing snacks to every meeting or should we keep volunteer sign-ups?
