STORIES OF SERVICE

For Isaac Leifert (17, Boca Raton, Florida), service has always been a part of life. When he saw how his work was able to make a difference in his community, Isaac began to brainstorm how he could tackle the issue of hunger in his hometown. He was quick to rule out the idea of a non-perishable food drive: "while this is helpful, fresh nutritious produce is often left out of the equation." Isaac also took into account the competitive spirit he and his friends shared. "What if I can get my friends to grow [produce], see who grows the most, and donate it all?

Isaac decided to create Gardens on the Go, a series of small, portable garden boxes that can be given to youth and adults who are at risk of going hungry. To make his dream a reality, Isaac applied for and was awarded a Disney Summer of Service grant! With his grant, Isaac, in partnership with Pinecrest High School and B'nai Torah Congregation, created 11 Gardens on the Go to donate to the SOS Children's Villages Florida, a foster care neighborhood that keeps siblings together.  The project was featured in the local newspaper.

Today, Isaac and his friends regularly visit Children's Villages. During a recent visit, Isaac spoke to some of the children who received Gardens on the Go. "They keep their gardens on the front porch so they are the first thing the kids see when they get home from school. Checking on their gardens gives them a reprieve and allows them to take their minds off of whatever challenges they're facing."

You can apply now for a $500 Disney Be Inspired Summer of Service grant through September 30, 2017 and join YSA, Disney, and youth like Isaac in a movement to make the world healthier, greener, and stronger!
For the past 100 years, America's high schools have remained virtually unchanged. Yet the world around us has transformed dramatically. It's time to turn the American spirit of ingenuity towards our high schools and come together as a nation to give our students the education they deserve. On Friday, September 8, some of the biggest names in entertainment will join students, parents, educators and more for a must-see, live television event. Discover how to take part in the World's Largest Lesson 2017 and bring the Sustainable Development Goals to your classroom during a twitter chat on Saturday, September 9 at 9am Eastern. Join in using #TeachSDGs.
Thirty-eight percent of kids don't know what their spark is. They haven't yet discovered what gets them excited, pushes them to learn and gives them purpose. We know that sparks are the first step to thriving-to creating a healthy, purposeful life. Adults are critical in kids' sparks journeys because we can get kids thinking and talking about sparks. We can earn their trust, start conversations and name the sparks we see come alive.

It's important for us to understand the depth of these challenges; hate speech won't just go away if we don't examine the underlying causes. There are specific activities we can use to engage students in deeper reflection and eliminate hate speech in the classroom.

SERVICE SONG OF THE WEEK
"What About Us?" - Pink

"We are searchlights,
we can see in the dark
We are rockets, pointed up at the stars
We are billions of beautiful hearts
...
Sticks and stones,
they may break these bones
But then I'll be ready, are you ready?
It's the start of us, waking up come on
Are you ready? I'll be ready."
