April 12 meeting: Happy Volunteer Week

Thank you to the YAC members who participated in the celebration meeting.  Thank you to
Sidney, Natalie, Mallory, Miranda, and Gabrielle for the snacks.  Thank you to Maren, Colton and Leighton who came to make bookmarks with the YAC members.  If you did not pick-up your National Volunteer Week T-shirt, please do so at the Wing before Friday.  The left over T-shirts will be given away at volunteer sites during Global Youth Service Days project opportunities.

Sidney facilitated the meeting.  

The placemats for Children Hospital will be delivered next week by a YAC group led by Sidney.  The date is to be determined according when everyone has time in their schedules to go as a group.  Belinda Anderson, Volunteer Coordinator of the Zone needs to be contacted when the date is settled.

Mrs. Clay requested volunteers for Global Youth Service Days project opportunities.   Please sign-up at the Wing or at sign-up genius if able to attend but did not attend the meeting.  Mrs. Clay needs to contact service coordinators Thursday.

Friday: 4-6  Boys and Girls Club:  Make bookmarks or helping as needed.  Mallory, Gabrielle, Natalie, Mrs. Clay and Miss Kruse.

Saturday:
8:45-12:00  Food Bank:  Mrs. Clay supervisor
8:00 - 3:00  Habitat for Humanity  Must be 16 years old, 15 volunteers needed.  Mr. Mark Delgrosso supervising in the morning and Mrs. Clay supervising in the afternoon.  The house is located at 

Sunday:
3:30 -5:30  Middle Division Community Room, Youth Groups and MD International Club members attending the screening of Girl Rising facilitated by Rachel Christie.  Mrs. Zedlitz and Mrs. Clay supervisors.

Sidney also gave information about YLOKC, Diversity Youth Board she founded.  YLOKC will recruit new members during the summer.

Sidney also asked members to sign up for the Fedex-Strategic Planning time on Saturday May 2. 1:30-4:30.  The date was chosen with SPC schedule in mind.   Aubrey is unable to attend.  Mr. Evan Walter facilitator

Mrs. Clay talked about an end of the year reflection and senior send off on Sunday, May 3 at UCO.  Cannon Susan Joplin facilitator  1:30-3:30

HELP PEOPLE    FIND YOUR HAPPY FACE 

The Casady Fair Trade Chocolate 3rd grade service-learning project teaches students about social justice and environmental stewardship as they learn about fair trade and marketing through interdisciplinary initiatives.  Students sell fair trade chocolate and donate proceeds by percentages to charities whose mission, vision, and practices they research before allocating funding..  See the display at the Wing showcased at the 2014 National Service-Learning Conference

Why YAC Bookmark & Bodine Elementary Mini Library Challenge

Join the Casady YAC,  Students Rebuild, Save the Children and Global Nomads Group to improve youth reading and writing skills around the world! Make a bookmark.

YAC will mail bookmarks after school Tuesday, April 21.   For each bookmark sent, the Benson Family Foundation will donate $1—up to $300,000—to Save the Children’s Literacy Boost program in Latin America (Peru), Africa (Mali) and Asia (Nepal).

Save the Children will distribute bookmarks to Literacy Boost students around the world. Funding generated by the Challenge will stock Save the Children’s international book banks in Peru, Mali and Nepal, improve school attendance, reading comprehension and self-confidence.

Why is reading and writing so important?  Illiteracy can lead to poverty, low self-esteem and isolation, poor health, unemployment / weak economies, inequality and more.  Worldwide, 250 million children of primary school age cannot read or write—whether they attend school or not. More than 30 million girls are out of school today and children from the poorest 20% of the population are four times more likely to be out of school than their wealthier peers. 

BODINE ELEMENTARY MINI FREE LIBRARY was inspired in the Little Free Library online initiative.   It is a take a book, return a book-gathering place.  In its most basic form is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick a book or two and bring other books to share.   During National Volunteer Week, bring a book new or gently used to the BODINE ELEMENTARY BIG mini free library BOX @ the Casady Wing.  Ask Ananya B.’17, Why Bodine Elementary?
